Been thinking for a while now about a next project and have finally come down to building a fan fretted guitar based around a triple O with 632 - 657 mm treble and bass scales respectively. Null fret at the 9th fret as it will give fairly even fret 'angles' above and below that point. Right handed with cutaway. Materials: still to be decided (probably whatever I have in store at the moment). Given the longer bass scale length I will probably try to emphasise that area and use western red cedar as a top with cherry back and sides. But as I say not finalised yet. From calcs so far I've established a radial point at 1420mm from the fretboard centre line which should make building a pivoting fret-slot jig quite a simple affair. TBC... This is a thread I'll be reading avidly. OOO plus fan fret. How would walnut b&s sound / perform? I played davewhite 's fan fret in Cheltenham several years ago and loved it. I don't have any walnut but I do have cherry... budget job...

Thanks Keith, Re: the 9th orthogonal fret position. I have to admit that I've done this very much on a visual basis. I constructed the fret layout in Photoshop based on the 9th fret then used the 'skew' tool to reshape the fret angles to fit a 7th fret (& 5th) positions but found that visually while the lower frets (<12th) looked reasonable the upper frets and the bridge especially looked at very steep angles. That's also a reason I kept my scale differences to 25mm. Couple of images of initial thoughts and the fan fret angles: These are initial thoughts

It does seem like a lot of effort doesn't it. I've looked at it in the past and I can see that it might resist splitting better than solid sides. My conclusion was that solid sides are more forgiving to the builder - no sand through to lower veneers etc. So I use solid sides. Are you giving it a go, Francis? On the fence at the mo - hence the question. I've made an ES175 look a like with veneer laminations but I used 0.6mm veneers and 4 layers so they were in effect the same as a standard side. Used the same timbers for the layers just in case I sanded through!

Interesting threads on built-up sides using various methods - what is the rational behind the technique...

Yes Jonny's book has a lot to answer for: got me hooked too Is it one of Jonny Kinkead's designs that my lovely maple OM is built from, Francis? I really have had some great reactions from people who've tried it. Yes that's the one. Few mods to the design like the slotted head but essentially that's the one from 'that book' I met Jonny at the Devizes guitar show last year - really great guy.

Individual strings will vibrate at a range of frequencies depending on where they are fretted. The guitar (as a system) will gather those vibrations but your bracing acts as a filter. Stiffer braces will carry the higher frequency oscillations across the soundboard whilst the more flexible braces will transfer the lower frequencies. Bracing is only one aspect - I've just recently used a 3 piece saddle and found that I get better bass/treble separation - perhaps a 6 piece saddle... I think the older Levin guitars had individual saddle pieces?
Superb workmanship by the way - great thread. Francis

I use wedges for backs and fronts but for smaller pieces I use 1" masking tape
