Strings are on. Few quick photos before they're taken off again to finish putting the finish on. Thanks to Dave for sorting out how to tune the thing Talk about being guitar orientated, having never played an octave mandolin (or mandolin for that matter) the thing was completely alien to me (and my electronic tuner !) Thanks for looking

That is beautiful, the marquetry running around the sides is lovely. Must have been a pain to do though! Well done Francis Thanks - 'Pain' not really - great fun ! - some of the words used during may not be found in school dictionaries though....

Applied a coat of oil finish to the body to help prevent finger marking while I work on the bridge and fretboard Hope you like

Ideally it needs a bone strip along the front and back edges of the tie block. But from the photo I would say its not really going to be a problem. The broader the face becomes where the string has begun to cut in the better the load bearing will be. I'd live with it. It looks a cosmetic issue rather than a structural requirement.

Thanks francis . I love the diagram! I'll try that tomorrow. Every so often I get the urge to swap my saddles around different guitars to get the best combination of action heights. It's all a getting a bit out of hand, really. Some people enjoy having lots of guitars but I feel cluttered up. Everything is out of control. What do you do with an ancient guitar that you're probably not going to play any more, but has a bit of sentimental value? Incorporate it into a new one!

Why are you trying to remove it? You say you've tried with a pair of pliers and by that I expect you mean you have tried to pull the saddle out by gripping it from above and pulling up. Try gripping the saddle at one end with the pliers and use a small piece of wood between the pliers and the bridge to act as a pivot point:

Great day today got to do some knife carving on the heel and headstock - couple of images: Will finalise the shape of the neck once the fretboard is ready. Francis

Looking really nice francis ! I love the rosette. Is that Cocobolo in there? Thanks Rosie, it's a piece of Santos Rosewood veneer. I bought a 'bargain pack' of veneer pieces from a marquetry supplier some years ago and I'm slowly using the better pieces...

The back isn't fitted yet and the way things are going it will be virtually the last thing to do. Will you take the opportunity to do some last minute voicing of the soundboard with everything in situ? Might be interesting to see how it sounds. Yes, it will just be a sanding job on the face, may do a little on the bracing but at the mo it sounds pretty good. Once the box is closed and bound that will be the test as the back comes into play and that may need some voicing too.

Thank you francis . I don't like to let on how little I know. I won't tell - just keep playing the way you do and no one will notice...
