Francis Milsom built this guitar during summer of this year. He brought it to HB9 in Halifax in September and during my wandering around and trying out some of the guitars that were present there I picked this fellah up and was immediately smitten. Now I know that the visual beauty of guitars is a big plus with many but although I like a well turned neck on a guitar as much as the next guy it is always all about the sound and feel for me. Let me also say that most of my guitars are dreadnoughts and if I were to have been looking for an addition to the stable then it would have been a wee parlour or a concert; not another behemoth like the J45.
It played and handled beautifully that day and it continues to do so. I only keep guitars that have easy playability and this one is easily top of that tree. The sound is, for me, superb. A lovely Gibsonesque thump to the bass end and superb sustain across all the strings. Intonation is perfect even when capoed up at the dusty end. I immediately fell in love with it in Halifax (never thought I’d ever write that sentence) so much so that I sat holding it until Francis returned from wherever he had wandered out to so that I could buy it before anyone else. I did and I’m still delighted with it. It’s my go to guitar now and the old Martin has been downgraded to dadgad.
I’m really only interested in the sound of guitars but this is a handsome fellow with lovely inlays, purfling, tuning pegs etc. The full spec can be seen in the build section and the thread is called “J45 build”. Photographs can be seen on that thread too. Many apologies but I can’t do photos.
It is also the cheapest guitar I have bought for some time and given that it’s my favourite guitar, it represents stunning value for money. Don’t, for God’s sake, tell Francis but I was prepared to pay much more.
