Given that most saddles are slanted, compensated and sometimes split string length can only be a nominal measurement. So what is the convention for measuring string length? I.e. Which string is measured?

I always presumed the measurement was from nut to 12th fret, then doubled.

What Gregg said Andy. The length to the saddle is always slightly longer than the nominal scale length to allow for the correct compensation when pressing the string down.

Thanks for that. I had massively overthought the question and had ended up a six string version of the Gordiian knot.
