I'm just wondering if it would be possible to bookmatch guitar sides and have 2 piece sides, strengthened in the center like a back, essentially asking because I have some long lengths of mahogany, which would be too narrow to be guitar sides, but if they could be bookmatched, joined and bent I could use them as sides, has it been done before?

Good luck with that Alex. I wouldn't fancy my chances of being able to bend the sides after they had been glued without separation. You might have more luck using 2 full hight/width veneers internally and making laminated sides. Whatever you chose it would be a labour of love I suspect.

Thanks, I've been thinking about it, it might have to become slimline, the sides aren't that narrow, but the guitar wouldn't be quite as deep as I'd like, going to be a low tuned 12 string

This part of a full height side gets routed away anyway when the bindings go on. The amount you can leave proud is the binding depth minus top/back height minus a smidge. Remember to make the neck and tail blocks the right height and glue the sides on them leaving this extra gap at the top and bottom. It's a little trickier making the rim and fitting the top and back but it works.

alexkirtley Google "Baroque Guitar" and you'll see plenty of examples of multi-piece sides. It can be done. Could be fun! Cheers Gary
