This was my first gig at this year’s Celtic Connections. I’d seen Ms Giddens 2 years ago at the Transatlantic Sessions concert and even in that august company she bossed the stage. So I was looking forward to this show. Strange thing is that there was no guitar in sight; the support act played a double bass and a banjo and Rhiannon played, as usual, a banjo and a fiddle, not to forget the support of a complete concert orchestra. 2 banjos. Yup 2 banjos. Her performance was breathtaking. Everything from bluegrass to Gaelic mouth music by way of jazz and some traditional Irish wrapped around some of her own compositions. Some of the singing was very moving like her version of The Factory Girl and she is still very political. But this woman can sing and she gives it everything she has. 4 (four) standing ovations. In Glasgow!! The scene of the death of so many performers. They booed Clapton off the stage last year. She’s a very accomplished fiddler and is no bad on the banjo, if you like that kind of thing. I’ll be back to see her every time she’s here in the future. Next week Gretchen Peters at the Transatlantic Sessions Concert. Cannae wait.
