Anyone know anything about cellos?
My son is about to start his Grade VI after a couple of years lay offf and has outgrown his 3/4 size. Not sure of his aspirations after that...
We’re looking at renting but also perhaps buying. Any thoughts or pointers?

Sadly not, although I love the sound.
I’ve found that Gumtree usually has a few used cellos, perhaps due to upgrades or giving up, but it might be a cheaper way to go if there’s a bit of uncertainty...

I'm with Martin here, Onechordtrick - ignorant adoration. I do plan to get one though - it'll be a Yamaha silent cello. There are other electronic sub-species brands, some a lot cheaper, but I'm getting a Yammy. My thinking is: - easier to cart about - early days practice (with headphones) won't threaten anyone's sanity (except my own) - I have a nice little acoustic amp that will work just fine with it - the sound is likely to be far superior to an entry level cello - if guitars are prone to temp / humidity issues then a cello is likely to be - likely better resale value when I give up after two weeks I suspect your son's tutor might be a better guide though.

Thanks, I’ve emailed his teacher already and subsequently found a couple of places that rent them out so starting to get a few options.

Phoned my mate, who's a school music teacher and former peripatetic brass teacher. He's strong on the idea that hiring is a good way way to go if a student isn't already committed, as they will not be stuck with an instrument that doesn't suit them in the short term, and if they do find they want to continue they will have a better understanding of their needs whne that moment comes.

Thanks!
Subsequently we’ve spoken to my son who’s unsure of how committed he’ll be after his Grade VI - he enjoys the piano more - so we decided to hire.
Which reminds me that i need to chase up the hire company....

A fabulous instrument. And you can play it like a bass!

A fabulous instrument. And you can play it like a bass! That is so true! It actually arrived yesterday and i can report that i can play it like a bass; out of tune, out of time and to the despair of my audience. The two instruments are truly equal
