Just been listening to a couple of studio recorded tracks from Ben's ( jackorion) forthcoming EP, "Nameless Gold", on his Bandcamp page benmorganbrown.bandcamp.com/You've probably seen his live vids of these songs and more posted here and so will realise what a great singer, player, performer and writer he is. I've heard the studio recordings of all these tracks and can thoroughly recommend them - a genuinely natural "in the room" sound which I love. If you preorder the EP you get two downloadable tracks now and the others when they are released in May. With a bit of luck, these preorders will help to finance making some "real" CDs I believe. Go on, you know it makes sense! Keith

Thank you ocarolan! As it happens I do now have real CDs on their way - should be with me next week and then I'll put preorders up for those as well. The EP itself was recorded entirely live - no overdubs, no edits - and all of the takes that made it on to the EP are first and, in come cases, the only takes I did that day! It was mixed by a chap called Owain Jenkins of Studiowz - www.facebook.com/StudiOwz/ - he did a really good job of taking our raw tracks and making them sound like a 'record' without losing the live feel.

Sounds great Ben. Did you record it yourself?

Sounds great Ben. Did you record it yourself? Cheers - nope I didn't record it myself. A friend of mine is setting up a studio and wanted someone to try out his new gear on without it being the pressure of a paid session so I went to his shed and put down nine tracks in three hours. We used a Rode NTK for vocals, and two AKG 414 in mid/side for the guitar/stereo width. He was running everything through a Neve style valve preamp. Everything was recorded live, no overdubs, no edits. the plan then was that he was going to mix them all but some other work came up and he wasn't able to do it so I was faced with mixing it myself or paying for someone to mix them - I did a few mixes of my own that sounded 'ok' but they sounded a bit 'demo-y' to me so I decided to cut the tracks down to five and pay for a professional mix - a friend of mine Em Marshall recorded her album with a chap called Owain at his studio Studiowz and I really love the sound of that record (check it out here, it's amazing - so i sent the tracks to him to mix. I couldn't afford to pay for mastering as well so I 'mastered' them myself - I basically ran the mixes through a LA-2A emulation set to the lowest compression setting, and then into the UA Ampex tape sim to bring the levels up, and then I used Hofa to add the metadata and create the final image and files. I'm really happy with the way it turned out - from the songs, to the performances, the sound and the artwork I think it represents me much better than my previous EP (even though I was happy with that at the time.)

Blimey, I really like that. Can't say anything else, it's just brilliant in every way.
