Acoustic Review have just published my review of the new Taylor 517e Builder's Edition, which is their new 'slope shouldered' Dreadnaught guitar. I felt that this guitar had a slightly softer and warmer tone and feel than a lot of Taylors - the neck profile was significantly fuller, and the upper mids were a bit less brassy. The playabilty was fantastic (as you'd expect from Taylor) and I really enjoyed the unplugged tone - the plugged in tone wasn't amazing but I think it could be massaged into a decent sound live (listening back to the video now it's obviously lacking some bass - I wonder if the sensors need adjusting?). Really nice looking guitar as well I thought!

Saw this on F/B earlier this morning - really enjoyed the review Ben. Certainly is a lovely looking thing and sounds excellent too. Agree re pickup sound, but maybe something like a Tonedexter would sort it out....? Obviously a versatile instrument, but surely no-one is ever going to be happy with just one guitar?! Keith

It's a lovely guitar alright. I tried one at GuitarGuitar a few weeks ago and completely agree with your thoughts (although I didn't plug it in) - very comfortable, mellower tone and much more my style than the other Taylors I've had. The builders edition pricing is a bit right enough!

It’s amazing isn’t it. I tried one and really didn’t like it except the playability which was excellent. I ended up with Bourgeois.

The Bourgeois is outstanding. Obviously it’s personal but everything about it is pure bliss.
Over the last 10 years I have owned over 12 ‘high end’ acoustic guitars; Fylde, Atkin, Larivee, Martin, Taylor and this was heaven the moment I picked it up. One other guitar I should have bought is a Huss and Dalton which was similar. The notes just sing on this and I have not looked at a guitar since because I don’t think I would find anything better.
However, here’s the caveat. When I entered the shop I went with an open mind. I tried absolutely loads and strangely enough there was an old battered Taylor 410 that was awesome and much cheaper. This led me to confirm my belief that two identical guitars can sound totally different. In the Shop was a guy who was a pro guitarist (although I consider myself good enough to discern quality) and he had, the week before bought a Bourgeois. He had also picked out that battered Taylor as something special.
I have done with buying guitars unseen and any future purchases would have me trying a lot of guitars.

Agree about the Bourgeois slope shouldered dread. I’ve played a few Atkins versions which don’t do it for me. I think the Santa Cruz versions (if you can find them) are pretty special as well.
Of course there is Gibson as well. You need to play a load - some will sound great and some not, some will play better than others but when you find a good one! The other thing I think about Gibsons is that the vintage and customs are not automatically better than the standards.
I haven’t tried the Taylor but I’d like to try it alongside the J35 or J15 which are great and mor contemporary guitars (I think).
