The back and sides are then pore filled using egg white – 240 grit sandpaper is dipped into the egg white and sanded on the back and sides to make a wood slurry that is pushed into the pores. The egg white acts as a binding agent and the pores are effectively filled by the same wood dust: Then the pre-catalysed lacquer coats are sprayed on: The neck is also sprayed:

The position for the bridge is scribed and the lacquer carefully removed: Then the bridge is glued on using hot hide glue: The label is signed ready for glueing in:

Your usual high standard of glue sqeezeout Dave. Obviously some sort of luthier euphemism. (leuthemism?)

Setting up the instrument involves fitting the Gotoh tuners and nut to the neck, bolting on the neck, reaming and slotting the bridge pin holes, fitting the bone saddles, fitting the strings and dialling in the desired action and playability by adjusting the neck relief with the truss rod, cutting the nut slots and setting the saddle heights. Here’s the finished guitar: The final job is to make a “bung” for the side soundport out of Claro Walnut with an Ebony pin. Soundport open . . . . . . and closed: So there it is, all ready for folks to buy a "ticket to ride" and win at Halifax in September

Having arrived home with Dave's guitar I am still thanking my lucky stars and of course Dave for his incredible generosity. It is certainly a guitar sprinkled with some kind of magic dust... there are few spooky coincidences surrounding my good fortune, one being that last year I also left Halifax with a De Faoite guitar, 'Anthea', which I spent a wonderful few weeks with as part of the forum road-trip project. davewhite thanks so much again. Here's 'Big Boy' in Norwich and below little 'Anthea' from this time last year, spaniel included for scale and reference.

Otherwise I can’t tell how big the guitars really are!

Be careful robmc: a spaniel in the works can be dangerous! It is a very fine guitar you have there and I look forward to its appearance in the Plucky Duck. Brian

You've let your lawn go. I'll take Buachaill Mór so you can concentrate on the garden.

That's what the kids' 'freerange' guinea pigs do to your lawn Vinny. Onechordtrick, his mother was a cocker and his father a springer, so depending on your point of view he's either a big cocker or a small springer or an average sprocker... Hope that helps
