A couple of you will have already seen that we got some good news last week - the post office is sold! Well, I say sold - it's a little more complicated than that, but to all intents and purposes, that's the simplest way to put it. I handed in my notice 7 years ago and it's taken Post Office Ltd that long to find someone willing to take on the role so that I can get my leaver's payment.
You might recall a post I made at the beginning of the year about my mental health issues, mainly depression? I'm convinced that my job was the biggest part of that, and so that's why I was building up a freelance business as a podcaster, photographer, videographer, musician and teacher. I'm a follower of Gary Vaynerchuck's and listening to his content has really given me the confidence and the belief that I can make a living as a content producer and teacher with the odd gig here and there. I've been working hard at that and it's beginning to bear some fruit. I My very good friend and erstwhile bandmate runs a restaurant and music venue in Brodick and he's hired me as his social media producer. I'm also playing there tonight. His support means the world to me and has shown me that I can bring value to local businesses. I also got my first paid gig as a photographer on the mainland earlier in the year, shooting for Sofar Sounds in Glasgow.
Things are beginning to look up and it's a really exciting time in my life. My last trading day is 28 October, so I really need to ramp up my production and my guitar pupils. I don't think I've been this excited about my life since I came out of the army and started uni, and perhaps not even then as I was spiritually quite unwell in those days, though I didn't know it at the time. Who would have thought that I could still find happiness and excitement in my late 40s? Life can be pretty amazing at times.
It would mean the world to me if I could get support in my business venture from the forum. I mean you all pretty much already do and I'm so grateful for that. Honest feedback would be very welcome, as would suggestions on interviewees, events to cover, dialogue, the whole 9.
I'll see some of you in Halifax and I'm going straight to Ullapool on my return. It'll be my first time at that festival and I'm super excited. I know I'm stepping out into the big unknown, but with a firm and humble confidence.
Thanks all.
