Just had an email from StringsDirect.co.uk that Elixir string prices are expected to rise between 30-40% as of July 1st ...
If these are your preferred strings, it might be worth buying a few sets...

Blimey, they're already appallingly expensive. I've used them for 7 years, but I may need to rethink.
Absurd prices for strings that already retail in the US for 60% of the UK price.

I like Elixirs alright, but if they increase by that amount, I won't buy them again.

How come? I was going to try these next time I re-string. I currently have D'Addario EXP on which sound pretty nice at present. I know Newton Falkner uses Elixir Strings and endorses them, maybe they need to up the prices to cover his fee.....unless they are tight and just slip he free strings in the post every week Newton is pretty cool by the way if anyone aint listened to him, quite liking his music

Wheres all the daylight gone? ..... Oh somebodies just robbed it!! Ive always sort of rationalised that as you can get a 3 pack of EJ16's for £12 which is about the same as one set of last 3 times as long Elixirs, Ive stuck with Daddarios, as I also get on with them OK and I always found it takes a few weeks for the initial horrible brightness to wear off Elixirs, have to say its now a no brainer!

For those who look for alternatives, Ernie Ball Slinky's might be interesting.
I don't use coated strings anymore and therefore can't recommend them from own experience, but they seem to gain quite a reputation at the moment.

I just discovered/ uncovered an old Strings Direct catalogue from 2006/7 the other day, and some of the prices have gone up a lot more than others. Elixirs were priced at £9.95 as opposed to £13.95 today. The strings with the easily the least increase, some of you will be pleased to know, are Newtone Masterclass £5.49 up to £5.99

I am still very impressed with Wyres coated strings (about £14-15), which Strings Direct are now stocking, as well as Ernie Ball Everlast, which are about £15. Having said that I noticed that Mansons are doing 3 sets of their own brand non coated strings for £14. Even if you have to change them every couple of weeks it still may work out more economical than Elixirs. I've heard from a couple of sources now that there is a global shortage of raw material for steel strings, one person telling me the Chinese have been buying it up in baulk in huge quantities. Makes me worried than all string manufacturers may be about to put their prices up. Robbie

Got to say I haven't been able to see past Elixirs for years now, but that sort of increase may cause a reevaluation... Although I was lucky enough to have an American acquaintance bring over lots of sets for me and a chum last summer. I wonder if he's over again this year... Maybe it's time I took a punt on some other makes.

That is very Tory-esque. Us normal people aren't hit anywhere near as hard as those poor bass players.....
