Bought a set of Earthtones strings - phosphor bronze, 12-54 gauge - based on some recommendations for bright strings.
One of my guitars (Recording King ROS-06) has a tendency to sound a bit dead and dull in the lower registers - the bottom E, A and to a lesser extent D strings. It's a nice guitar, with a very robust, straight tone, not many overtones, but it has its own virtues with strong fundamentals, and a sound almost like a classical guitar at times even though it's a six string. I've been on a bit of a mission for a while to find strings that 'unlock' it and sort out the dead bass.
These Earthtones seem to do the trick and it seems like a much livelier guitar as result. Time will tell how long the 'new string shimmer' lasts, compared to other well known phosphor bronze brands.
Shortly before the change of strings, I also swapped the bone bridge pins for brass, which also seems to make a small difference in terms of clarity.

I've never used these strings though I see they are well reviewed. Brass bridge pins can make a big difference, they do add a more upfront feel and clarity. I found them a bit a bright for me but as you say experimenting with different combinations is the way to find you preferred sound!
