We heard about this free warm up gig via a local folk info newsletter at the weekend ...last night at the White Thorn Inn , Shaugh Prior ...only 15 minutes away! We arrived in time to eat some excellent fish and chips and test a local ale. SOH plus Cormack Byrne and a couple of others arrived and started to set up a small PA [ two tops with subs ] at one end of the pub...it was interesting to see how "pros" set about it and fascinating to watch them sound checking each member of the band individually . They seemed to be having some problems controlling the bottom end initially and there were some ominous hums intruding from time to time but eventually they got it together and played a test song involving them all...a few more tweaks during the song improved the sound further and after a short break they came back and performed an excellent set . There were lots of old favourites interspersed with new songs from their recent "Battlefield Dance Floor" album. The performance was really tight with fabulous harmonies and dynamics. Cormack Byrne added another dimension to the sound...very impressive and sympathetic use of various percussion instruments. The evening ended with "Galway Farmer" to generous applause from the other SOH fans who'd heard about the gig plus a few good ol' boys who initially maybe thought that their quiet Monday night at the pub was being disturbed. Steve K commented that the last time they did a pub gig was back in the early 90's and that they swore they'd never do another [didn't say why ] but they all really seemed to enjoy this one. If last night was anything to go by the forthcoming tour should be excellent! Sorry about the quality of the pic ..the best I could get with my phone.
