Hi guys, Just wanted to share a track I recently uploaded to my sound cloud. It is actually the first original guitar piece I wrote which was last year. I was learning a guitar arrangement by Antoine Dufour of Imogen Heaps "Hide and Seek" which has an unusual tuning of D-A-E-G#-A-E (low to high). After exploring this tuning for a while I created "Homecoming". There is also a capo at fret 1. Please tell me what you think. soundcloud.com/james-daubney/homecomingThanks James

Hi James,
Thanks for sharing. Interesting tuning - sort of an A tuning though not quite Tony McManus's bagpipe DAAEAE one. I can see/hear that you are exploring new techniques and the piece has a nice groove and drive to it and your playing style is confident and in control. I think Eric commented that your music would be great for film/TV and I have said about adding other instruments and I can see now why. The piece to me seems to be about exploring moods, feelings textures etc but personally I'm looking for slightly more in the way of a lyrical hook or melodic content - it sounds like an accompaniment at the moment and I keep waiting for the melody to come in. That's just me and the sort of music that grabs me and draws me in. I tend to have a short attention span for "mood" especially in a four minute plus song but a melodic hook will draw me in and I won't notice the time. I think there is potential to develop this further.
What where the good things you liked about this tuning and is it one you could use a lot more do you think?

I enjoyed that James - nicely recorded, some lovely tone and very well played. I know what Dave means, to me it would sound great with a melodic line over the top with another instrument, say violin, flute or clarinet ... (maybe the odd oud here and there:)) I like it as a composition, it has enough structure and coherence to sustain other elements.
Thanks for posting

Well I can certainly detect a melody or two! Like Leon said, there is potential to build up the texture in this piece. Some lovely harmonies come in at about 1'54, which could be further exploited in the song maybe. Possibly a change of key would sound good towards the end, but this isn't always easy in alternate tunings. Some pieces are really nice at creating a mood, without being particularly 'whistlable', and this is one of them. Heaven knows a lot of my own stuff wouldn't exactly leave you humming the tune afterwards. There's room for pieces like this and I liked it a lot.
Lovely piece,
Robbie

First of all I think the recording, playing, technique and sound are really great. To be honest I am not a great fan of percussive stuff (an age thing maybe? ) but I think this is tastefully done and I enjoyed it. With regard to the point Dave made on melody, I can understand where he is coming from and I understand Robbie's point of view also - I enjoy both Dave's and Robbie's music a lot. My little simplistic tunes are all about melody I suspect but I would love to be able to come up with something and play like this occasionally. I listened to it a number of times and it does have some lovely variations, twists and turns with a lot atmospheric or 'mood' melodic content in my opinion. I give it a Regards Phil

I'm another 'non-tappytappy' fan but it wasn't too intrusive on the track so I was quite ok with it.
I thought it was a mite too long, mind .. would probably be fine if there was an accompanying video but to just listen to it I found my mind wandering a bit...

Really helpful comments, thanks.
I also understand where everyone is coming from. When I play the song through in my head I imagine a lead Cello line would work well with it. I sometimes think that a couple of other pieces would benefit with another instrument such as "Amethyst" which is also on my sound cloud profile. I'm also very keen to find a similar guitarist who I could play in in a duo with.
To answer your question Dave, I probably wouldn't use this tuning again for a while. I found that I was quite limited for ideas and it is also an awkward tuning to change to during gigs. I also didn't like raising the D string by a tone to the E or raising the G to the G# as there have been occurrences when they snapped from the tension (luckily it didn't happen when performing live!)
Thanks again
James
