Thomas Dunford was on 'In Tune' on Radio 3 last week - he sounded 'proper'. According to the presenter he's known as the Eric Clapton of the Lute - so I thought I'd dig a bit deeper. He's a 'bit good' I think.

Excellent post martinrowe Funnily enough a CD of John Dowland lute music has just dropped through my letter box today. It's played by Nigel North and called 'Fancyes, Dreams and Spirits - Lute Music 1'. I have liked his music since hearing Clive Carroll playing 'Preludium' Found a second hand one for a few quid Phil

Lovely piece of playing and a great sound too. Someone great at playing guitar can make it look easy. Something about the lute means however good the player is it still looks tricky as hell. Mark

That was a lovely piece of music. So atmospheric and a stirring link to the past. That lute looks more than a handful. I watched a few linked videos and came across this.
A viola da mano, that looks and sounds like a cross between a cittern and a lute. Must make playing tricky, having gut frets that go all the way around the neck.

Been trying to find his Bach CD for months now but despite coming out only a couple of years ago it is out of print everywhere. Amazing player, great to see so many young lutenist around these days. Maybe we have the late Julian Bream to thank in part for that
