Hi all I'm not a big fan of gloss finishes on guitars, and i'm wanting to do up a couple of cheapy guitars for travelling around with and general playing around the fire type thing. I want them finished in matt though, or as near to the bare wood as possible. What is used to get this finish? I'd be sanding the guitar down to the wood, but is there a specific varnish used with guitars? I used a satin household varnish on one project a while back, it wasn't great. Or is wax or polish ever used? Any help most appreciated. Calv.

Hi Calv, I would suggest Tru-oil applied to the bare wood. It's an American gunstock finish which is readily available on eBay. Once a few coats have been applied and are hard, you can use very fine- 0000 wire wool and wax to get a satin finish. As always experiment on some scrap wood first! Cheers Gary

A note of caution based on personal experience. I have found matt finishes to be the cause of a lot more extraneous noise in the studio than gloss. Body rubs, brushing etc all get pickup up by the mics.
