So here are the finished photos. The body is French polished and the neck Tru-oiled.
My thoughts at the time went along these lines.
"Although these strings aren’t ‘sticky’ like the polyurethane ones, being so thick and round-wound my fingers don’t seem to slide on them as easily as they do on electric bass strings, so there’s quite a lot of ‘string noise’. It also seems that I have to be fairly precise in fingering; otherwise I can get a rattle and they are rather hard on the fingers. They don’t give the same double-bassy sound as the poly ones but sound similar to an ABG. It’s a pity they don’t do flat-wound ones."
That was about 4 years ago. A few weeks ago, quite by chance, I found out that Gallistrings are now making flat-wound strings for Uke-basses and on a Youtube video someone compares them to the round- wound and polyurethane ones and says they solve all the above problems. So I ordered some and found it’s pretty much true. Of course there’s always a fly in the ointment. They are much more expensive than all the others. (The photos were taken with the round-wound strings).
