It's something I keep meaning to do - maybe when I retire. Well...? Keith

I have a Hohner Blues Harp in C and a gorgeous (and expensive) rosewood Suzuki Pure Harp (MR-550) in A, that I bought when I lived in Japan. However, despite trying a few times over the decades, I have never got anywhere with either, so well done for keeping it up!

I always quite enjoy playing one although this is probably only once a year. It is far too easy (for me) to become quite cliched about the whole thing. i have a song I recorded with one last year (my Brexit song) and this has become my most downloaded song, especially popular in the USA which doesn't make much sense. I think the harmonica must have added something — though it is difficult to see what!

For a long time, I would have said harmonica was my main instrument. I haven't done so much in recent years, although I still give the odd lesson.
This was back in the day:

That was superb PistolPete I've got a few moothies (as we call them up here) and I've used them on some songs. I've never managed to get my gob around note-bending though I think this is the only recording of me playing the moothie... galluscrows.bandcamp.com/track/western-road

Loved that Pete! Great singing too. Keith Thank you - I've never been entirely convinced by the vocal on that one myself. We performed it live on a student TV station. On the dry run the sound guys noticed a buzz & tracked it down to the monitors - meaning they were unplugged just as we went live. What you see there is me standing between a drum kit and a 100W guitar amp with no idea if I'm even singing in the right key

Those were the days when Mick Jagger was just Cyril Davis' harmonica player. Check out the Cottonopolis Ralph McTell thread to see how a harmonica can add flavour.

Those were the days when Mick Jagger was just Cyril Davis' harmonica player. Surely Cyril Davies was Cyril Davies' harmonica player? They might have both played with Alexis Korner I think?

I’ve always meant to have a go, and had a basic one in earlier years, but really struggled to make any sense of it. Given Walkingdecay’s recommendation for a good primer I might be tempted to have another go; any recommendations for an inexpensive but sound (ha!) starter instrument?

Been playing harmonica for around 30 years, yet it only started to make sense once YT came along and I learnt there were other tunings. (I play exclusively in "Paddy Richter")
Anyone wishing to learn blues harp check out Adam Gussow or Modern Blues Harmonica on YT as starting points. If you want your mind blown check out Jason Ricci.
Over lockdown I've learnt vibrato and refined my overblows. Two techniques I should have mastered years ago.
If you want to learn Blues, you'll hear a lot about Cross harp or 2nd position. This used to fry my brain but as a guitarist think "modes". 2nd or Cross is the same as playing Mixolydian.
If you want to learn 1st position (ie the Key the harp is in) get ready now for next Xmas, as carols are a great place to start. (Try working out "Silent Night" starting on Blow 6)

Blimey, please tell me that you haven't mastered jigs or reels. A recording of you playing in paddy Richter would be highly appreciated.
