Hey guys,
I've been a little quiet the last week or so because my custom Alexander arrived 10 days ago and I've been too busy playing!
Thought I'd come on here and post a few photos/mini review...
The guitar turned up whilst I was at work last Thursday and straightaway I unpackaged it and tuned her up - firstly it looks lovely, nice even grained top, some cool figuring in the mahogany (see the 'eyes' in the photos) and a lovely rich colour all over (the photos overegg this a little) - I was worried the mahogany, combined with Roger's dislike of staining, would be a little sterile, but it's a nice orangey colour with some deep browns running thoughout.
The binding and marquetry purfling also look great, with just enough colour in the rosewood to catch the eye.
I have to say the guitar was pretty dusty when it arrived, with a thin film of wood dust making it look a lot duller than it actually was, but, after a quick string change to d'addarios (I don't like the elixers) and a quick wipe down I was ready to play...
Initially I was struck by the volume and responsiveness - the guitar was very lively feeling. With fresh strings and having been played for the first time it felt quite bright, but after a week of playing the low end is already developing nicely and the harshness has completely gone from the trebles.
The setup is super low (which I normally dislike) but there is only rattle when you want it and the neck feels great - I was slightly concerned about having a neck that was too low profile and I don't know if Roger has taken that into account but it's slim without placing strain on my hand, and also full at the same time - hard to explain!
The shorter scale means stretches are easy and the guitar feels nicely compact and like the low frets are close to hand.
Since ordering the guitar I've drifted into playing almost exclusively in 'altered' tunings including some with Cs in the bass and I was worried that the short scale wouldn't be able to handle this but, with a light touch, the guitar seems to project that low C just fine, although it shines in DADGAD which is where I've got it sitting at the moment.
I know it's the honeymoon period, but I honestly couldn't be happier with the guitar - it plays great, it sounds great, it looks great!
