Hi all, So I've been recording some videos at home for social media etc, and I've come across an issue... If I record a video on my iPad, and then try to sync up the audio from my Tascam DR40 in iMovie afterwards it starts off in sync, but then slowly gets out of sync as the video goes on... I can line up a test clap on the screen and the clap noise on the video audio and the external audio perfectly but, as the video plays from that point you can hear the original and extenal audio gets further apart (it starts off sounding a bit phasey, then eventually it's almost in slapback territory, so the distance between the two sources must be getting more as it goes on)... I'm recording the tascam audio at 44.1 16 as that's what comes off the ipad video file, initially i thought it might be because i was recording at 48hz on the tascam, but it made no difference swapping between the two.. any help? Cams???

You need to strip the audio from the video file - don’t know what you are using but most apps do that. You will then end up with 2 ‘file’ - just delete audio and import real audio file.
Which apps are you using?

Which apps are you using? I'm using iMovie on my macbook... I can strip the audio from the video easily enough, but when I import the external audio and line it up, it slowly starts going out of sync, so if I just used the external audio and removed the original, by the end of the clip it's way off... and the amount it gets off by increases as the video goes on, so it's not as if it's out of sync by the same amount the whole way through the video, it's as if the video is playing faster than the audio...

And if I line it up so it's in time at the end, it's out of sync at the beginning... is it some sort of clocking issue like if you're using two different interfaces?

I'm guessing here, but video is recorded at a sample rate of 48 kHz and audio is usually at 44.1kHz. Try changing the audio sample rate to 48kHz and hopefully they should align.

Well I tried everything - audio at 44.1 and 48, converting the video file to a constant frame rate, even exporting the original audio and lining it up with the external audio in logic and exporting a new file that was exactly the same length - but it just wouldn't stay in sync...
So i bought a usb to lightning adapter (£30!! blimming apple) so i can plug my Tascam dr40x into my iPad and now it works! I can also (through a slightly convoluted system using my grace preamp) plug my Ear trumpet labs edwina in to the tascam and record that to the video on the ipad, so that's the way I'm going now - just filmed a video for an online festival this morning and the sound has come out great.

The setup certainly works really well - congrats on getting it sorted - well worth the effort. What a great song - lyric is spot on, loved the internal rhymes, voice and guitar sound just like benmorganbrown! Keith

Thanks leoroberts and ocarolan - it was a bit of a faff getting it all to work together but I didn't want to fork out loads of money but I still wanted to get a good finished video - shame the only space I can get more than 5 minutes peace and quiet is in front of my bedroom wardrobes though! The iPad is an old iPad mini from 2013 (I think) but the camera on it is okay as long as there's lots of light - so I've got all the lights on in the bedroom (including side lights) and it's the only room in our house that gets a decent amount of natural light where I can also set everything up (the kitchen/conservatory would be best really but I'd never get a moments peace!). The sound from the iPad itself is pretty bad so getting the Edwina to work with it has made a massive difference. Thanks for the comment on the song too - I've been indulging my Beatles-fan side of late and trying to write songs with middle eights and not being afraid of being a bit catchy! Also in standard tuning which has been a bit of a revelation for me - five new songs and not a detuned string in sight!
