I am totally going off at half cock on this one, but I'm so excited, and I want to go home to try it out. However,I'm stuck at work until at least 5 o'clock. So it could be a whole bunch of garbage for all I know, but it looks cool. I have bought a Positive Grid Spark 40 practice amp. Here it is.They do take your money when you order, and I had to wait an inordinate amount of time for delivery, but they do update you on when you can expect the delivery. I don't know whether they manufacture to order, or whether it's been in such great demand (it is a new product) that this was just a bow wave. So the wait might not be as long now, or it might, I have no clue. Now the thing that attracted me to it was the app allowing backing tracks, modelling of various amps and pedals, remote control, and, best of all, what they call "Smart Jam" where it apparently senses what you're playing and synthesises a rhythm track in real time. I find the whole concept pretty exciting. I have no idea whether it will be. But I'll let you know soon! It is supposed to be able to be used for electric and acoustic guitar, and for bass. How the latter will work, I don't know. The speakers must be pretty tiny. It's quite a small unit, but rather smart looking. It's just a little bigger than those Pye transistor radios I remember from the 60's. Any road up, this is a bit of a vacuous post, I'm afraid. I have nothing to tell you except ... I have a Positive Grid Spark 40!!!! Yippee!!!

Looks like a serious bit of kit, Paul - and great fun too. Sort of a virtual Charles?
Let us know how you get on. I'm intrigued.

Looks an amazing bit of kit. I'm far too old school to get one but would be very interested to know just how good it is.

Looks good , and technology has been heading that way pretty fast. 10-15 years ago and I'd have been snapping one up! It'll be interesting to hear how you get on with it. Mark

Paul, I'm looking forward to reading about your first impressions with this amp. I had a look at their website. The facts and figures seem very interesting, especially for a shed(or rather livingroom)-player like me.

I've had a chance to play with this piece of kit now, and although I haven't really come up with anything remotely resembling music, it is even more fun than a Golden Retriever puppy in a pond.
It's fairly easy to learn to drive, and the controls on the amp and the app are pretty intuitive. I'm sure I've only scratched the surface thus far (not literally - it's still in pristine condition). It has capabilities beyond what I've been able to do yet.
All the app icons look like bits of hardware, so amps and pedals mostly. And all the virtual knobs and switches work as you'd expect (though it took me a couple of hours before I discovered that the control knobs on the screen adjust with a swipe as well as a turn - which makes it much easier to operate on a small screen).
The Smart Jam function is ludicrously simple, but the accuracy leaves a little to be desired. It recognises major and minor chords and sevenths, but fails to recognise other extensions. I'm sure this is one area I will understand better as time goes on, but once you realise you have to play 8 bars of your sample in the tempo that you preset, it works fairly well. I'm pretty sure that if the amp is a commercial success they will update the software to improve this area.
It's dead easy to use jam tracks from YouTube, and offers you a massive selection of those in all genres. I haven't used the chord generator that you can apply to any YouTube video, but I suspect it will suffer from the same limitation as the Smart Jam feature.
The amp itself is attractive and light, and sounds pretty good to my ears. It is a very convenient and versatile practice amp even without the app, and at $300ish it seems pretty good value just for the amp. But it's the app that makes it such a lot of fun.
I don't think I'd like to use it for gigging. You certainly can't invoke pedals on the fly. There's a lag of maybe a second between switching the virtual pedals and their coming through the amp.
Overall, I think it's really good for the money. It's more than a gimmick, I feel, and if you can still get the inaugural discount of 25% (as I did with a pre-order) it brings it in at less than £200. Stupidly good value.

You wish, Andy. Nope. I am a constant lurker. I know what’s going on all the time. You have been warned!

Yes, Bernd. It’s really good fun. I didn’t use it much for a few weeks, but it’s small and I now keep it handy, so it’s useful if I just want a quick electric blitz. I still haven’t used the jam function other than to try at the beginning (it does work) and I don’t know why, but. It’s really quite versatile for a guitar only amp. I’m glad I got it. It does just what it says on the tin. So if you think from all the YT videos that it would be worthwhile for you, by all means get one.
But I do stress that I really don’t think it’s a performance amp. It’s a toy. Albeit a good one.

And if it's half as good as the Positive Grid marketing is, then it must be quite good Mine should arrive within the next 10 days. I'm very looking forward to have a go. None of my steel strings have a pickup, so this will be for electrics only, I suppose.

I think it is worth pointing out that if you are going to play live then it is worth practicing at home through some kind of amp — even a toy can become a useful rehearsal tool!
