Had to do it Just perusing the local ads when this little beauty appeared! Deering Goodtime Parlor Banjo (short scale). I had bought a really good Deering Goodtime Special just under 2 years ago but sold it earlier this year (at a loss! ) as it wasn't getting the use it deserved. When I bought it, it was really the short scale version I was after, but Eagle didn't have it in stock at that moment, and being the fickle, childish moron that I am I just went for the full size one. So when this came up yesterday I didn't hesitate. Picked it up today, and it's in good condition and cost about half the price of a new one. It's just the thing I need for slinging in the car to have a pick whenever the chance arises. The guy selling it was cool too - he let me play his other banjos while I was in Attachments:

Martin,
Looks lovely - well done you. Looking forward to some parlour numbers in "The Plucky Duck" when you get the hang of it. Is the tuning different from your longer scale length banjos?

Thanks Dave. It was a bargain I couldn't resist, and I've been actively looking for one for a while too. It plays pretty much the same as my main banjo, and since I often capo my banjo up a bit, it doesn't feel very different at all. It is meant to be tuned to standard G, but with the shorter scale it feels kind of mushy there. I tuned it up a whole step to A and it sounds marvellous. Just got to watch the tension and make sure to use light strings when tuning up as these Goodtimes don't have truss rods (rock maple necks, though...).

They love it! Okay, they all had to go out tonight to an impromtu barbeque (that's what they told me), but I'm sure they will take time to listen to it tomorrow...

Nice one. I've only tried the Goodtime with the greater protrusion, but I liked that a lot. It had a pleasing, kind of fulsome tone that belied its prosaic appearance.
My 'jos have got to go up in the loft. I just haven't felt the urge to play them in months. I've kind of moved over to dobro, which uses many similar three finger techniques.

What a shame the banjers are being moth-balled As to technique, I refuse to move beyond clawhammer/frailing. There's just too much to learn otherwise and I'm very lazy.

I feel a 'banjo workshop' coming on for next year's meet.... Mine isn't getting played much at the moment and that is just wrong...
Love the look of that shortscale, Martin!

That's a jolly tune to start the day... Though not such a cheerful title!
