They say the Devil makes work for idle hands. Well all I can say is that Covid restrictions make for excessive money spending, especially if you're newly retired!! I really didn't mean to do it. Plan was to get a 'pick up and go', bash it about in a pub kind of guitar, but I've ended up with an absolutely gorgeous older Sobell. It couldn't be more different to the Steinbeck and yet fundamentally still a Sobell. I am a very lucky man.

Fantastic buy. You can't beat a good "bash it about in a pub guitar"

Congrats! Once you've really got to know the new/old one, it'd be great if you would tell us a bit about the similarites and differences between the two....

Model 1? Acquired on the Lancashire coast? Now that would be telling... But yes 😉 Keith - I’m changing strings on both of them today so give me a couple of days and I’ll do some notes on the differences. I might try and do some sound clips if I get chance as well. The one thing I can say so far is that they both have immense presence!

Congrats on the new acquisition. Sobells are well... Sobells and are fundamentally different to anything else. I have two of Stefan's creations, a Martin Simpson MKII, which he built for me, and a Model 0 12 fret Brazilian which I was really very lucky to acquire whilst waiting on the MS model. Both are completely different but both are unmistakably Sobells.
Cheers,
Ian

Congrats on the new acquisition. Sobells are well... Sobells and are fundamentally different to anything else. I have two of Stefan's creations, a Martin Simpson MKII, which he built for me, and a Model 0 12 fret Brazilian which I was really very lucky to acquire whilst waiting on the MS model. Both are completely different but both are unmistakably Sobells. Couldn't agree more. Despite the 20+ years age difference between them, and the distinctly different construction details, they both have something that very much marks them out as being made by Stefan. As requested by Keith I'll try and put some notes together comparing the two and if I can think of something to record, I'll try to add some side by side sound clips. Really though the best comparisons would be against other guitars of similar intent. The only other guitars that I've played enough of in recent times to compare have been Martins, a couple of Maton's and my Larrivee, none of which really compare in any way (IMHO). I'm lucky enough to live very close to Stefan, so ahead of impending lockdown I popped up to see him with the Model 1 and it was great to see him scrutinising the guitar, accompanied by lots of 'why did I do that like that' comments. I also got to try his current favourite - a D model guitar (I think this one was based on a New World). Despite the longer scale it was very comfortable and easy to play. I didn't do it justice, but Stefan entertained me with a fine rendition of a traditional song and it sounded fabulous.
