I was just wondering what examples people had of a brilliant sound on a recording that when investigated was done in a really simple way? I heard a snippet of Take Five on the soundtrack of the West Wing the other day and was so impressed by the drum sound that I went off to find out how they were recorded & found this picture from the Time Out sessions: That's it - one U47 a few feet in front of the drums, plus whatever bled into the other three mics. Some old school reverb done with an echo chamber. Pretty standard set up in the Columbia records studio at the time (see Kind of Blue et al). If you aren't familiar with record it can be heard here:

Different kind of thing, but Keith Richards discovered the sound of the little cassette recorder he used to record ideas, when recording over the limit, gave exactly the distorted sound from acoustic instruments he wanted. Some of the Stone's greatest records were made like that. equipboard.com/pros/keith-richards/philips-cassette-recorder

Great sound!

Yes simplicity like that is the best. Mind you, it was probably a nice sounding room :-)

That's a brilliant sound recording made by gifted musicians who play very sympathetically together. As Andy said, the large room would help. I love the 'boom' of the floor tom during the drum solo.
We're watching re-runs of the The West Wing too. The writing is superb. Just started series 6.

Mind you, it was probably a nice sounding room :-) Columbia 30th Street Studio ("The Church") is one of those hallowed rooms like Sun Studios or Abbey Road Studio 2 where a pantheon of legendary recordings were made, but from what I've heard the engineers who worked there at the time all thought it was too big and insufficiently insulated from the outside traffic noise. Since it was demolished to make way for an apartment complex in 1985 I guess us mere mortals will never really know whether Kind of Blue and The Sound of Silence were great because of the room or in spite of it. Aiming to get season seven ticked off in time for Biden's inauguration!

Yes simplicity like that is the best. Well, it is when it works. I have hard drives full of efforts that demonstrate how tricky it can be to get such a simple set up to sound brilliant! š³

I've been enjoying listening to the 'OneMic' series of videos. Even when I don't enjoy the music, there's something delicious about hearing acoustic instruments all recorded directly into one stereo ribbon mic. Granted, while this is definitely a simple recording setup, it is also a very expensive recording set up. The series either uses an AEA R44 or an AEA R88, both of which are over 2 grand...
Here's one example:

ISTR that Supertramp got the sound they wanted from the sax solo in "The Logical Song" by recording it in a tiled toilet cubicle. Definitely one of my top ten sax solos.
(And off-topic, but I think the Klezmer-like clarinet on "Breakfast in America" is simply great. They were an excellent and innovative band)

That drum setup looks like the "Glyn John's Method". I tried this with some 6th formers years ago. Had a chap who insisted on micing up everything, including 2 mics on the snare. I asked him to compare the recored sound to the Glyn John's setup using just 3 mics. He declared it to be the best drum sound he had ever got! I seem to remember the Who and Led Zep used this method as well.
