Thank you for the link scripsit- I'll have to check that out later as Logic is still downloading these ruddy drum kits!
Another technique I've seen, and was used when a friend did some recordings of me in a church last year, is the ORFT method. This is kind of like XY but with the capsules pointing in the opposite direction. You have to get the maths right though. The capsules have to be exactly 120 degrees to each other and an exact distance apart (I forget exactly how much). All it entails is making up a cardboard template, which I might do at some point.
Another technique that has always given great stereo images is middle and side, but I have only been able to do this when using other people's mics, as it involves an omni and a figure of 8 mic. This then needs decoding, which thankfully Logic has a plugin for.

Yes, I tried that ORFT thing, but couldn't get a decent result because I think it works best when you are a reasonable distance back from the microphones, and the room treatment (or lack of it) becomes an issue again.
The mid-side combination is recommended by some people whose recordings sound pretty good, but I haven't got that combination of mics either, and I must admit that even though the technique makes perfect sense when I see the diagrams of the microphone fields I can't really get my head around it as soon as I look away.
Have fun, anyway. Have you got a long headphones lead? That was a recommendation by Doug Young that I found useful: to try different seating and microphone combinations but listen to yourself briefly on headphones every time you set up to record even if you don't use the phones when actually playing for real, because often slight alterations of only a few centimetres of position can change what goes into the DAW and it's really hard to get everything exactly the same for different sessions.

This then needs decoding, which thankfully Logic has a plugin for. I used M/S (which I was very happy with) in omni/fig8 but the best configuration I found for the mic's was cardoid/cardoid. I didn't use any decoding and it was fine...

Thanks EWH & Robbie for replying, I'd love to become adept using these programs, but alas I fear I'm past it! One step at a time I guess. Anyone else feel it is beyond them?

I persevere with the first edition of Cakewalk Guitar Tracks that I've had since around 2000 simply to avoid learning how to use a new programme! Some of its functionality doesn't work now in later editions of Windows, but the basic recording and editing functions are still OK, and that's all I ever use. Simple is good. :-)

Well.......complete bummer now. The focusrite forte that I bought for the recording project has conked out after just 4 days !!! The other bummer is that according to Absolute Music's website they don't have anymore in stock. Robbie
