jonnymosco , who chose what choon to showcase? The tune you played certainly seemed (to my ears) to show off the range and tones of the guitar, I just wondered who chose it and why it was chosen above other pieces? Just interested in the thought process, really Stefan said he didn't mind which pieces, but asked for me to wear something colourful! I thought the guitar should be showcased and not me, hence the photos of the guitar interspersed in the video. We opted for full pieces rather than snippets and A and B-ing. I wanted to bring out the best in each instrument and chose accordingly. I also didn't want to just play the same old stuff I've recorded before, so stupidly learnt three new pieces in a day. Here's the next one (same design, but German Spruce top)

Douglas Fir interests me. Adrian Lucas made a guitar with it a few years ago and reckoned it turned out much better than he anticipated. That guitar did sound good and with this one I liked what I heard. Through my system it did sound somewhat different to what I think of as the Sobell sound. Will be intersting to hear the E spruce one.

There was an article on Brook Guitars posted on here a while ago.
They said all of Brook guitars are built with a flat top.

There was an article on Brook Guitars posted on here a while ago. They said all of Brook guitars are built with a flat top. J Sobells have always been slightly domed. From his website: Ever since building my first ‘flat-top’ guitar in the early 1980s, all have had a slightly curved soundboard: flat wood pulled over curved braces. But in mid 2020 I built three experimental guitars, one a Martin Simpson model and two New World models, all of which had truly flat soundboards. In other respects the soundboard design and bracing were unchanged.

Superb playing Jonny on great guitars. I played them through my 30kg Ferrograph transmission line studio monitors and the bass really did come out, especially on the Douglas fir top. Mind you, you can make any guitar sound good!

Both guitars sound excellent, but I really loved your playing, Jonny (especially on the Andrew York piece) Clear, precise and fluid - just wonderful, thanks for sharing these

Thanks for the kind comments michaelm and otis1960. A new recording is coming soon - this time on one of Stefan's Model 2 D guitars, 725mm scale-length. Cheers Jonny

Sounding great through my 30kg ATCs too, haha.
Maybe be an obvious question but how can you tell if guitar is truly flat topped or not? Like, is my Lowden flat top or curved?

I should get some of those 30kg ATCs! Stefan has always domed his tops, he writes on his website: Ever since building my first ‘flat-top’ guitar in the early 1980s, all have had a slightly curved soundboard: flat wood pulled over curved braces. Even though he called them flat tops, they were not. If you've held a Sobell, the dome is really pronounced, unlike most other flat tops which have a slight curve like Lowdens. He liked the sonic properties of a 1930s Martin carved archtop he owns and adapted the concept. Jonny
