Thanks for the info Jonny! I guess most "regular" acoustic guitars are actual real flat tops then?
The ATCs are great. Expensive, but I rely on them for work, they are extremely transparent and unforgiving, and have paid for themselves many times over during the last decade.
What mics and positions did you end up using? Sounds great.

Rode NT1A, positioned c.40/50cm from guitar to pick up some of the room acoustics. The brief was for the recordings to sound as close to the actual sound of the guitars, so there was a lot of experimentation. Here are some photos from the Sobell site showing the set up and really annoying sound guy!

Fabulous! I usually end up with 40cm minimum too, (pair of KM84s here). I don't like close micing with cardioids as it starts to sound unnatural, you get the proximity effect, and more string noise etc. I like a bit of room tone, too! Omni are good if you do need to close spot mic, as you don't have any proximity effect with those.

Really good to hear that your " annoying sound guy " was able to reproduce the sumptuous sounds you brought out of the Sobells using a relatively humble mic set up. Just off to dust our Rode NT1A..
