Morning all. Replaced a dodgy switch on my trusty (original) Shergold a couple of days ago and when I was giving it a once over, it reminded me that it really needs a refret, and preferably the fretboard refinished as well.. Does anyone have any recommendations on who they have used in the North East area? Cheers.

Have you tried James Bragg in Middlesbrough. I've not used his services personally yet but I might give him a try if I needed a job doing that I couldn't do at home.

I have used Stuart Palmer : www.stuartsguitarworks.com/ He's a thoroughly lovely person, highly proficient and talented. He has done work for Martin Simpson. Cheers, Ian

Thanks for all the suggestions gents. I've managed to get sorted with Haydn Williams just over the border from me in Cumbria. He's a fabulous guitar builder and I don't know how much repair work he normally takes on but he was happy to do the Shergold for me. williamsguitars.co.uk/Interestingly, during our long and very enjoyable chat, he mentioned that while he mainly builds electrics, he prefers building acoustics. He didn't have one I could try while I was there but if his electrics are anything to go by, his acoustics will be pretty special too. For what it's worth (and having played and owned far too many electrics over the years) both the guitars I played were beautifully built, and probably among the best modern electrics I've played. They are beautifully built (he's even making his own pickups now), played perfectly and were well worth consideration if anyone is in the market for a really good electric. To be honest, I think his electrics are too cheap for the level of work and quality!

There seem to be a number of very fine makers in the UK who don;'t get much press, but maybe also don't seek it out that much.
