I stumbled across this earlier this evening. We know he makes lovely guitars and he’s quite a nice player but but the Lord Harry his missus can’t half sing. I got the old goose bumps.

Dimming of the Day seems to be a song that when it's covered, I either like it a lot or don't like it at all and rarely anything in between. I agree this is a superb version and it gave me goose bumps as well.

A great cover of one of my favourite Richard and Linda Thompson songs.
I subscribe to Adrian and Liz's channel, both for the great music and to see Adrian's 'interesting' range of hats.
For example:

I agree this is a superb version and it gave me goose bumps as well. That’s because it is a bastard of a song to sing. Often it involves a nasty key change (though not always) for the middle verse. I played this in a trio for years with each of us taking a verse which kind of helped. It is also a weird tempo though it doesn’t sound it. Keeping the guitar accompaniment going is hard. It’s not technically difficult but I keep dozing off in it or getting lost in daydreams. The last time I played it was in a scratch pairing at an RMMGA gathering a couple of years ago (I tried to avoid it but with no success). cams was videoing these but hopefully he didn’t catch this one. A lovely song but please if I’m in the Halifax P dip with you do not suggest this one. Please. Ever.

andyhowell it is a great favourite of mine, and as you obviously know it, maybe it could be your first song in the COD?

andyhowell it is a great favourite of mine, and as you obviously know it, maybe it could be your first song in the COD? Don't get me wrong but it is a great song. But wierdly really difficult to perform well. Ithink it's the tempo — I always feel it wants to speed up or slow down. RT has a habbit of doing this with his Strict Tempo thing. I find it difficult to sing and difficult to play — usually I can make do with one or the other but not here!

It's certainly not the easiest to sing - I tend to run out of breath through lack of forward planning! And agree with you andyhowell that simultaneous playing and singing isn't easy. My (quite ancient by now) only recording of it was with separate guitar and voice tracks, which makes life a lot easier! In celebration of RT's birthday tomorrow (72) I'll bore you with it again - app.box.com/s/2ebphfb7hotpr87ijcixcolins - I don't think I've ever performed this song "live" other than in the privacy of my own privacy...... Here are Adrian and Liz as members of the Stand In Blues Band — Liz is behind the drums if you don't spot her at first. This might help explain why every guitar of Adrian's I've played is a good blues box! Liz is multi talented — she has also written a one woman play 'The G-Man And Me' based around her life as a Rory Gallagher fan! I've never seen it and maybe it wouldbe nice if she did some of it for YouTube!

andyhowell thanks for posting this, it’s heart warming to see the band having so much fun, but it also emphasises how much I’m missing live music.

I appreciate this thread has moved on a bit from Dimming of the Day, but thought I would still post my thoughts anyway.
Back in the 80s I became, and still remain today, a big Any Trouble fan and their version of this and my resulting fascination with the song was my introduction to Richard Thompson.
