I was looking at a nice mandolin on ebay the past few days. Actually almost considering bidding if the price remained good. Then I noticed the description more closely, which described a small scratch and 'dink' near the tailpiece. On closer inspection of the photograph, I'm not sure that's a scratch, and it looks more like a crack, perhaps brought about at the same time as the 'dink'. What do you think??

Thhe 'dink' looks like a hole to me, and at the very least the finish is cracked. I'm not sure about this one, particularly if the seller isn't being 100% honest.

It sold this evening for £235. A decent price if it's only a scratch (over £500 new), but a bit of a risk if it's a crack...

Looks like a proper crack to me. Closer to the dink hole it looks like there is a slight separation, which (IMO as an expert luthier) would not happen if it were just in the finish.

That was absolutely a scratch, and furthermore I have the skin and clear eyes of a fifteen year old and I have the utmost respect for our present generation of politicians, even though they're all made in the same factory in Cheltenham.
Must thrash my Kentucky KM172 and get a bit of the stiffness out of it. I intend to do a review of it, but it hasn't been out since a couple of days after I got it.

It'd be nice to see a review of your mando, Pete
