I went out today, to get a guitar and bass. I had in my mind to get a Telecaster and either a 4 or 5 string bass. I did try out a couple of nice Teles but came home with a 4 and 5 string bass, instead. I already have a very nice '61 re-issue Jazz Bass, so didn't need another JB. But I picked up an American Original 70s Jazz Bass, in vintage white and got rather wowed by it. Really gorgeous and very smooth to play. Well, it has different pickups, positioned slightly different and different body wood to my '61, so that's my excuse for getting it. I also tried a couple of Cort 5-stringers. A GB75JH which is incredibly good, for very little cash. But the one that came home with me was an A5 Plus SCMS, which is a single cut bass, with a through neck and multiscale fretting and really excellent spec. Bartolini Mk1 pickups, Hipshot hardware and some beautiful woods. Including Ash body, with a spalted maple top and a maple and panga panga neck. The pre amp works really nicely with 3 band EQ, vol, pan and a passive/active switch. 2 very different basses, in pretty much every way but both are a real buzz to own and play. The Jazz will be more for band playing, the Cort for noodling and recording. Though I may take it to band practice, for some fun.

Wow - congrats Graham! A happy bank hol w/e seems assured!
The colour of the Fender is fab, and the back view of the 5 string has answered my longstanding wondering about what the back of that shaped bass would be like! Much knobbage on that one too - tone and vol for each pickup I guess, but plus ...?

Two very nice looking basses you have there, but the Fender especially so. It looks gorgeous in that colour and the whole thing looks very tastefully done. I don't play bass, but for some reason I've always fancied having a Fender Jazz bass.

Done with some style, Sir: two in one hit!
The JB looks exceptional; the Cort looks fantastical, love the spalted wings, and it is clearly a lot of guitar for the money. Delayed gratification in respect of the Tele, I assume?

Supplementary question: Given your location, where do you go to find such goodies? With the sad demise of Sounds Great, I am in serious need of a really good guitar store within (reasonable) striking distance of South Manchester

It may seem a lot but it really gives you the oppertunity to make finite adjustments to tone for recording and is useful for adjusting to some room's acoustics. BTW, I just noticed in the Fender's hard case, you get extra hardware. A chrome cover for the bridge, a chrome, string covering rest and a plastic thumb rest. None of which will be put on the bass, whilst I own it.

It has a far more playable neck, a cooler look and my preference, two pickups. Here's a pic of my '61 MIJ JB.

Well worth a visit, it has an amazing array of electric and acoustic guitars. The only areas in lacks in is basses and amps. If you want a a great collection of acoustics, electrics, basses, keyboards and amps, I'd highly recommend Promenade Music, in Morecambe. Go on a nice day and you get a day by the sea too.

My collection is not a large one, as I tend to move stuff on. I have the 3 basses, seen above, an Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray RS electric guitar and a Yamaha CSF-TA acoustic. I was thinking, if I had kept every guitar I had owned, over the years, I'd probably not be able to access the upstairs of our house.

I'm not a bass player so don't know anything about the characteristics of the Fender Precision or Jazz basses but have to agree, the Jazz just looks by far the most appealing. In my eyes, it's one of those classic, ageless designs with everything coming together perfectly. That sunburst with the rosewood fretboard looks gorgeous.
