Just sometimes you see someone play who makes you look at your guitar and think "I could always stick it in the garden with a begonia in it" This one of those times. I give you the greatest Tommy Emmanuel

Wow, that is a pretty extraordinary rendition of Classical Gas! I always feel exhausted after watching him play!!

No disrespect to Tommy Emmanuel, who is undoubtedly a highly accomplished player, but would you really want to play like that? I feel it becomes unmusical at that speed. I have seen Tommy play live twice and, he doesn't do a lot of it, but I much prefer his slow soulful playing.

I’d love to have a fraction of his ability but I prefer his slower stuff. Fantastic player.

I agree with malcolm. For me, Tommy Emmanuel is an excellent live showman, but musically, he leaves me cold. There's an old saying: "Just because you can doesn't mean you should" Iain

Back in 2005 I went to Les Paul”s 90th birthday bash at Carnegie Hall, NYC. The first half consisted of some of the worlds most acclaimed rock and jazz guitarists playing one tune each. Tommy was the only performer who received a standing ovation.

All I know is I just can't believe it when I see him play.
I was privileged to see him live in Swansea about ten years ago. Amazing to say there were only perhaps 50 people there. The venue was a small one but still had space for around 300. And I was seated only about 5 metres away from him. Just fantastic.
Lavaman quoted the 'just because you can doesn't mean you should' saying. But why not ? At the end you could see that he'd just thoroughly enjoyed himself. Nothing wrong with that. I just love it all, fast and slow.

A lot of this type of playing, while impossible for most of us, is just showing off and it becomes boring after a while. Unbelievable as it seems I have heard it said that Tommys brother, now deceased I think, was an even faster player!

There's another great player who I can listen to at home. Again he's better live with his trio including his father on second guitar.

I can't stand him. Showmanship over taste.
