I've started messing about with a 5-string banjo, and like the old-time style (i.e. not bluegrass or clawhammer)... anyone got any pointers to good sources for tunes to try?
What I've discovered so far is that every tune seems to be in a different tuning!

It’s old time clawhammer I mainly play, but a popular old time style is two finger or thumb lead. yes, tunes tend to be all over the place in terms of tunings, but you’ll get used to that. Stick to one or two tunings for now and try to find tunes in those tunings to concentrate on. banjo hangout has plenty of info on old time styles and there’s loads of lessons on YouTube to get started.

Rob MacKillop has a tab book with banjo tunes from the late 17th century - see link
I don’t know anything about his banjo material but have a couple of his guitar books and enjoy them. Brian

I've learned a lot from Aaron Kiem's book and videos of clawhammer uke. He also does arrangements for two finger banjo but not having a banjo I haven't tried them. A banjo is next on my my list... www.quietamericanmusic.com/banjo-tabs-and-videos

Thanks for those - I will definitely go and look at them (provided Mrs hasn't used the banjo for firewood in the meantime. She isn't keen)

After decades of guitar playing, my fingers (and brain) are getting freaked by four strings on the left hand, but five on the right.

She isn't keen) I've got a banjo uke but Mrs M has banned me playing it in the house, it's been banished to the shed. I haven't summoned up the courage to broach the issue of a 5-string yet. I might have to get a banjo mute...

It would be great if all the banjo playing members on here took their banjos to the next Halifax meetup and all played "old time/ragtime" tunes as an ensemble.....like Sheps banjo boys of the 70's and 80's.
