As some of you may be aware I am a 70's prog rock fan and by favourite band are Yes. Tonight I am going to see 'An Acoustic Evening with Jon Anderson - The Voice of Yes' at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. I saw Yes a number of times in the 70's and I have seen Jon before in a similar scenario with Rick Wakeman which was good so I'm looking forward to tonight. Cheers Phil

I must let you in to a very dark secret- back in the 80's I loved Jon and Vangelis. There I said it!
Let us now how it goes. I have of course since discovered Yes, and would agree, they are one of Prog Rock's great bands.

You lucky man! YES were one of the first bands I knew, and Close To The Edge was the first CD I bought in my life even before I owned my first CD player

Good luck for tonight. 70s Yes were a great band. I have to think from Jon's last CD, that his recent bouts of ill health have taken their toll on his voice. It's a shame that Yes tour without him, these days. He founded them, with Chris Squire.

Should be a good gig. Loved Yes back in the day. I've been to a Wakeman gig, a Bruford gig, a few Steve Howe gigs but never seen Jon Anderson solo. One of the first songs I learned to play was And You and I. Takes me back.

It was a good evening, very relaxed and a good atmosphere I have seen Jon with Rick Wakeman previously and I am sure Jon would be the first to admit that he is no virtuoso on guitar (or any instrument) so I knew what to expect. Jon's main strength is the voice and of course the song writing. We all know about the quality of the songs so the question in my mind was how is the voice? Well, I can report that his voice seemed strong, clear as a bell and in my mind he could sing with Yes again - but at the age of 68 (69 in October and older than the other Yes members by 3/4 years) would he be capable of an arduous tour? it remains to be seen and I can only hope I get the chance to see them together again. He sang many Yes 'snippets' with a few Jon & Vangelis songs including a couple of covers - the audience was clearly with him throughout joining in etc. (Manchester being 'near' his home town of Accrington). There are already new videos on YouTube from last night but the sound quality is poor and does not really do him justice. Having said that here is one that Robbie should enjoy and it includes his story about meeting Vangelis and his attempt to get him in Yes and their Top Of The Pops appearance: A very enjoyable, 'light hearted' musical evening celebrating this remarkable man and his music Cheers Phil PS I should explain that The Royal Exchange Theatre is an 'in the round' theatre hence the reason he is turning around frequently.

Thanks for that Phil. Like most of Yes, Jon sounds better, with the band. Love to see him one more time, back in the fold but I fear it'll never happen now. I still reckon, Close To The Edge, Fragile and Going For the One, are up there with the best. It all makes one feel very old though.
