This re string is doing me right in so I snapped a string on my 1st set, got some more today, but the g string keeps slipping when I go to tune it......I get to e/f then to g flat but then it slips back down to e/f. The string nr the bridge is getting very tight and I expect it to snap if I just keep going as I am......any advice much appreciated cheers phil

Do you have geared tuners or friction ones Phil?
The friction ones have a screw to tighten them against slipping, but it may not be the tuner at fault as uke strings do take an age to settle down - make sure your "knot" at the bridge is secure, and winfd the string over itself on the tuner post, son't have too many windings, keep cranking it up to pitch every half an hour or so and it might be stable after a few days of that! Good luck.

Cheers Keith - the tuners are geared ones - I did wind the strings, all of them round quite a few times to be honest, as I had no idea how much string to pull through the tuner before starting to wind.......I have watched several vids on youtube too, and still struggle.....think I might take it to the shop to get them to show me in the flesh so to speak....

Put the end of the string through the tuner hole and pull string taut. Pull string back 3/4" or so to give some slack and loop the end of the string around the post and poke the end through the hole again in the same direction as the first time. Bring the end of the string around down the middle of the headstock and back under the string between nut and tuner so that when you turn the tuner the free end is overwound by the tightening string. Works for me, but still takes a couple of days before tuning is reasonably stable.
If you end up with too many winds once at stable pitch, use less slack the next time; if too few, use more. I find two or three winds around the post is plenty.
Hope that makes sense. Easier to do than describe!

Nice one Keith i'll be round in 10 for you to sort it Joking aside the slipping has stopped - wierd - and its now tuned, well for about a minute it is then it needs tweaking - as you said though it will settle in a day or three You can just see the tops of the tuners due to too much string wound round, but will follow the above next time so it looks much better Just ordered myself a uke t shirt cafe press online - half price sale on until his eve.....yes i know i am a sad git Keith i have seen a t shirt just for you, hang on let me get a link up.....
