I ventured out to a live concert for the first time in two years this evening, and managed to see one of my favourite songwriters - Dougie MacLean. Amazingly, I've actually never managed to see Dougie live before, so this was something I really looked forward to. The event began unusually, with an email sent out on Wednesday advising that due to distancing requirements, the show would be split into two parts, and my ticket got me into the second performance, starting at 9.15pm. We would also need to wear face masks... The venue was Baljaffray Parish Church in Bearsden, north of Glasgow. We found it easily enough (about a 40 minute drive) and it was really well set up for the occasion, with a merch table and very comfortable chairs laid out in sensible groupings. Ominously, I spotted a banjo lying on the stage next to a harmonica Dougie was wandering about outside the main area, so was very prompt starting and strolled on with his lovely signature Moon guitar, to which he attached what I believe to be one of those iRig thingmies. He really invovled the audience from the start, with various stories and singing lessons for the numerous infectious choruses we were all contractually obliged to join in with. Classics such as Broken Wings, Talking with My Father and Caledonia (obvs) were reeled out, finishing very strongly with a superb Feel So Near as encore, featuring Dylan-esque harmonica solos. And yes, he did play the banjo for one song, stating that he had chosen to learn the instrument during lockdown - takes all sorts, I suppose! All in all, a really enjoyable evening and so good to see Dougie live at long last.

Sounds like a great evening, Martin! I've not been to any of his concerts either - must have been lovely. So many great songs. Enjoyed the Feel so near clip (I have been known to give that one a go now and again...) - hope the choruses won't actually be infectious...

I've been following his live free concerts on YouTube - they've been great. I've only seen him live in person once - at The Lowry a few years ago. He has such a good back catalogue. Sounds like a great night, Martin. Congratulations on venturing out
