I haven't played any Blue Moon instruments Leo, sorry but I have heard from various forums that I visit that in general they aren't the greatest. Then again, they are incredibly inexpensive for what you get, so perhaps the still represent good value for money.
That particular zouk you are looking at looks very nice, certainly and if you had the opportunity to visit Hobgoblin to try it out, I'd love to hear what you think of it.
It looks as if it will play and sound very much like an octave mandola rather than a standard zouk due to the short scale, and for the money it would be a low risk investment if you could get some interesting sounds out if it.

Leo, I've got my original and much battered travel guitar-bouzouki "Celtic Tigger" that you are welcome to borrow - 605mm scale length tuned GDAD or GDAE: If you are passing you can pick him up or I can get Becky to take it back to Manchester with her after Christmas/New Year.

That's more than decent of you, Dave... I'm banned from going anywhere near yours (as Sara knows I'd ask you to make me something I can't afford) so, if Becky would be kind enough to bring it up to the frozen wastes I'd be immensely grateful! (Don't feel you're a failure if you had to take a breath halfway through that last sentence!)
Cheers muchly!

Aye, it's the octave mandola/mandocello that I really hanker after but nobody seems to make them at my price point (2 pints of Guinness and a bag of pork scratchings). I've wanted one for years - ever since seeing Paul Downes play one and, more recently, Steve Knightley. Dave's build thread set me off all over again.... The one I'm looking at is on eBay so even cheaper than new, and I'm currently the only bidder.... <coughs>

Update: well, I won the auction (I was the only bidder!) so, for a penny less than £50, I'll get to see what it's like. I suspect* that, when I get to compare it to the zouk which Dave White is lending me, there will be a very clear preference....
*know
