So I restring my baritone uke today (Living Water GCEA, low G, unwound, nice) and I had to use a cushion to prop the neck up, not ideal as the uke kept moving, so I'm looking at getting some kind of block/neck rest and I was wondering what you guys use...

I do my restringing with the instrument laid across my thighs or gripped between them.

Bought myself one of these for my last birthday (I mean my previous birthday, not I hope my last! ). Works well, just have it on a table in front of me and allows me to sit down while changing without straining my back.

A7C62832-1734-424A-891B-657B0B0C2214.webp (9.44 KB)After many years of messing around with towels and bath mats I bought a Hercules neck rest. It is adjustable (to a degree), and folds flat, therefore fitting neatly into my string change pouch. To stop the guitar sliding around I have a small rectangular piece of non-slip mat that I place under the guitar at the other end. Not sure how this particular neck rest would work with a Uke, but it is a neat piece of kit.

I put the guitar on a stand when I restring it. Simples.

Can't do that with the baritone, the nut keeps falling out ....change one string at a time, then it won't. Or, just glue it in. keith The weird thing is there's a hole in the wood under the centre of where the nut sits, and the nut itself has 3 small holes in the plastic. I might change it for a tusq or bone nut in the future so if I glue it in I might not be able to get it out again. The saddle also just falls out and I'm not sure if there is a right way round to put the saddle in the slot. I might change that later too Also, should it be intonated for the second string?

I always changed strings in pairs, 1-6, 2-5, 3-4. This keeps the neck under tension allowing the guitar to settle back to its stress equilibrium faster. But as Keith says if you do take the strings off and the nut falls out, (if it is well fitted it should be a slight friction fit) then a single drop of wood glue in the centre should hold it in. Do not put on too much glue as it would make removing it to fit a replacement difficult and a little risky as often the glue is stronger than the wood.
There are a host of guitar neck supports out there, just enter guitar neck support on amazon for instance. I always used a leather bunny eared sandbag, designed as a rear rest for benchrest shooting.

I've got a Stewmac Rock-n-Roller Neck Rest that I've had for years. It's pretty good, but quite expensive for what it is.
