Just a mention for anyone wondering about a slightly more expensive ukulele experience.
My better half has just recently got a 2nd Pono uke. A Baritone to be a big brother to her Tenor. No comments about a tenor's friend please.
A definite step up from the likes of Kala and Ohana - lovely sounds - rich, musical and resonant. Good build quality too.
Even better with Living Water strings .... your suggestion of string if I recall Keith ( ocarolan) and they're on all the ukes in the house.

I've got a Pono acacia Tenor, it's one of those instruments that just feels right in my hands and is a pleasure to play.

Acacia too for the Pono Baritone my wife got - lovely sound and feel. The Tenor she has is a Mahogany and your description of how it feels exactly matches what she says.
