I've changed the strings on three instruments over the last few days and have ended up with a pile of spiky , twisty, tangly bits of metal...
I normally put these into our recycling "green" bin that the council collects every fortnight..don't know if this is approved of by our local recycling centre...I could ask of course!
What does everybody else do?

I just shove them in the bin. Not sure what else they're good for...other than stabbing myself in the toe when I miss one or two of them on the floor.

Mine just go in the bin too - there's only certain things collected round here as recycling, though I suppose i could save them for when we go to the tip with a load of stuff and then put them in the "metal" skip. Ah, but tin cans are collected, maybe I could put them in one of those - thanks for making me think Andrew! Keith

You're supposed to change the strings? Aye, that's what us profeshnals do, Leo. I even twist those knobbly things at the end of my guitar sometimes too. One day, son, one day

That's a really good idea Lynn...only snag is that when I take the old strings off the guitar I usually cut them just below the tuning peg so that I can pull the bit that has been wound round the peg out "backwards' ...this stops the curly , spiky bit from scratching the headstock. I could just take a bit more time and care and not cut the string though..

I'm not actually against sending used strings for others to use, but it does seem almost a bit patronising to me, and serves to reinforce the have/have not aspect of the situation. Why not send them some new ones as well if you are able - the dreaded Elixirs would seem to be a good choice for longevity. (Apart from the fragile G strings anyway! ) Keith

Good idea re sending new Elixirs Keith ...at least they are readily available unlike N.w.o.es! ;D Can't say that I've ever had a G string break on me.. Twang , yes..!
