I've just returned from Motherwell Civic Centre where I watched Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham play for two hours of sheer magnificence. Not only was complete mastery of the fiddle and accordion on display, but the interplay and almost telepathy between these two exemplary musicians was a joy to behold. Even the chat/repartee was worthy. Speaking of performing before the Queen at Balmoral, Her Majesty enquired of Phil as to how difficult it was to play the accordion. He replied, "Why? Do you intend taking it up?" He further ventured, "it's like rubbing your belly and patting your head" When Aly picked up his other violin, Phil quipped that it was because it was in the forensic tuning, or C.S.I. tuning. That is, it's all in 'D' n 'A'. They finished with a tune they said they always end with, called the 'Fairy Dance'. Aly said it was dedicated to the England Rubgy Team [Remember they were playing to a partizan audience of octogenarian Scots-folk ]. Great gig, and one to recommend if you catch them on tour

Seen them twice on Arran. Great stuff, but the tales were largely the same both times... Still, these chaps are top of the tree and if you have any interest in British traditional music you should make an effort to see them.
