Not that I need any more guitars, dream or otherwise, but if money was no object I would bid to win Don McLean’s 1929 000-28 and Vega long neck banjo, both of which are up for auction in a couple of days. I went to see them on display in Newbridge near Dublin last week. Don played them exclusively on his 1970s tours and I saw him numerous times then. He was a major influence on me not least because he played a relatively small bodied guitar with a great unamplified sound. Update on this post….. I bought the banjo! Chris, you need to post some pics or even a clip of this one!

Bit late to this one but I'd love a Wee Lowden.

Even later to the party! Been thinking about this since the thread went up, certain that I didn’t have a dream guitar. But of course I do! Ever since I saw the cover of Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan I’ve lusted after a Gibson J200. I’ve nearly bought one several times. At the end of the 70’s I nearly ordered one for £1,200 from a guitar shop in Christchurch. Then a few years ago with ocarolan and andrewjw in Exeter we were in Mansons being looked after by jackorion when he worked there I tried one that I was quite taken with, it was about £3k. Then there was a 53 (birth year)J200 for auction at Gardner Houlgate that I nearly bid on (I think it went for about £4500 which would have been nearly 6 grand after auctioneer charges and VAT). But the problem is that only a few are really good. The old Gibson QC problem, I’m afraid. So to buy unseen is a few thousand quid gamble, and I’m not happy to do that. I am toying with the idea of an Epiphone Inspired By Gibson J200. They have them in Andertons for way under a grand and in their January sale they have £180 off the natural top model. That seems a bargain and they have great reviews. I may just have to do that. I hope they’ve still got them after I’ve paid my tax, if I have anything left over. But it won’t be a Gibson, no matter how inspired it may be. So I think it will remain a dream.

+1 on the Gibson J-200. Every time I see Emmylou with one... I was in Nashville a few years ago, and popped into Carter Vintage. I saw what looked like an employee talking to a customer, and went over to enquire about J-200s. The customer turned out to be John Smith. I blurted out, "What are you doing here?", to which he replied that he was on tour, and came in to look at a Collings that had caught his eye. After ascertaining that his gig dates in the next week were always one day out from my travel plans, they asked what I was doing in the store. I said I was looking for a J-200. "Isn't everyone?", they chorused. I went to Gruhn Guitars, and they had a pre-loved maple J-200 which IIRC was a 75th anniversary model, mint condition and not unaffordable. I prevaricated and procrastinated over it, but walked out without it. I don't know why, because it was doable at the time. On a later trip, I was at the January 2020 NAMM show in LA, where Gibson released the Custom Shop 1957 SJ-200 (amongst other models). On their crowded stand, I loved it, I loved holding it, but couldn't really hear it properly in the packed show bustle. I decided to find a dealer with one in stock when I got home. Well, then Covid hit... So, scorpiodog, it remains a dream for me too. Peter

Inspired by The Byrds, Heartbreakers and R.E.M. my dream guitar would be a Rickenbacker 12 string. I'd probably rarely play it though...

I had a '73 D35 from 1975 until 1996 when I foolishly sold it to a friend and bought a J-40 which was soulless and with a very shallow profile.
I was opening for Isaac Guillory one night and whingeing to him about how the J40 was cramping my style. He handed me "Junior" his '69(?() D35-S 12 fret dread. It was perfect for me .... but it was his!
I searched from '96 until '99 when Seamus Brady at The Acoustic Centre rang me to say that he had assembled four 12 fret dreads, including the second Collings DS2h to come into the UK.
I played that guitar for 21 years, until I replaced it with a later model, and a DS1 and a DS1ASB, oh and a 0002h.

Having thought about it a bit more, there is one instrument that makes it into the "dream" category for me (and it is *very* firmly a dream).
Many years ago I visited Eric Schoenberg's shop in California, we ended up talking about guitars and I mentioned how I'd never been taken by Martin dreadnaughts. He brought out a 1940s D-something-or-other that was simply incredible, quite possibly the finest instrument I'll ever get a chance to play (and with a price tag halfway to six figures, not one I'm ever likely to own!)

Recently been thinking quite a bit about a Yamaha FS5 and also a Lakewood C32 (it's the 00 size with a deeper than standard body, spruce on EIR, fantastic instrument imo).
Also the Wee Lowden with cedar on walnut would brighten my day.
My GAS is so bad I'm intoxicated by my own farts.

Lowden S-50 winter series, limited edition. I love the clean appearance (I don't like fancy guitars), and I like the bevel for comfort, it's just awesome.

Just a decent, full sized classical would be nice

Just a decent, full sized classical would be nice This is good value and plays like a guitar three times the price - all solid woods and comfortable to play, I recommend it to my beginner classical players; more a 'realistic' guitar than a 'dream' guitar though. Jonny

Jonny I hadn’t realised that classical versions of crystal singing bowls were in production..
