Yes, I know it's all subjective, but I'm always interested in others opinions. I'm a singer/songwriter, and I both pick and fingerstyle with a thumbpick. I record, and I gig. I have a set of engelmann and brazilian, and a builder ready to build soon. I have several bigger guitars (J45, D35) and would like something smaller this time. I will give the builder free hands, but I have four different "models" as a starting point (I want a short scale): Martin 000 28, Gibson L 00, Gibson Kel Kroydon and Gibson J185. My question is, based on this information: What would YOU choose? Thanks, John

My main instrument is: probably needing new strings

Gibson L 00. Sounds like a smaller guitar with sweeter trebles and slightly less bass would give you a more rounded sound for your fingerpicking - and look different enough, too.

Another vote for the L OO - same reasons as Leo!

Engleman tends not to have a great headroom, so is better suited to the smaller body guitar to avoid muddiness if driven harder especially with a rosewood body. So yes, I'd go for the L-OO, (or OO-28), 14" or so lower bout.

Thank you for answering. Seems to be consensus as yet. Bring it on!🙂

On my L-00, OO, size bodies with 14" lower bout I used a 13 fret to the body join but did use a 645mm scale length. It's all about where the builder wants to place the bridge for his personal bracing pattern and X brace angle. This is my All-English woods guitar that is owned by David Hutton of the forum. Colin

Other people have commented on all things but comfort if I’m correct. I would go for the 14 fret 000 because I find it the most comfortable of my 3 guitars. The other 2 are a 14 fret 00 Torridge and a 12 fret 00 Lyn.
I would try the sizes if possible.

Lovely looking guitar, Colin. And yes, I will try the sizes. I'm a fairly big guy, and used to larger guitars. At the moment, I'm leaning towards a L00-type guitar.

That's a lovely back on that guitar colins. What wood is it?

Another vote for a OO, it's the goldilocks size for me. I had the good fortune to visit the Brook workshops where I could try lots of different sizes - and also play some but I tried a number of unfinished ones "for size". I already knew that I wanted no larger than OOO and the OO was the sweet spot for me.
But you may be comfortable with something larger or smaller so I'd suggest you go somewhere with a wide range, it needn't be guitars you'd buy but having lots of different sizes to hold will give you an idea of what feels right.

dobro for what my opinion is worth (probably very little) I would opt for a Nick Lucas 13 fret style with a pyramid bridge. There is a luthier in Sweden whose name I can’t recall who builds fine instruments, Homesick Mac has a number of them.
