I've been watching a few YouTube videos on the lute of late and I'd really like to get some CD albums, but who, apart from Julian Bream, are the recommended players of this fantastic instrument? Any CD recommendations out there?

Yep, Nigel North is one of the best lutenists out there. Bear in mind, as good as Bream was, he played the lute like a guitar and so produced a very different sound. My favourite lutenist though is Jacob Lindberg, whose albums can be found on the BIS label. He also plays the baroque guitar. Thomas Dunford is one of the great modern players, if you can find his albums. And if you think lute music has to be over 300 years old you should check out this album: outhere-music.com/en/albums/calling-muse

Look for Konrad Ragossnig. The austrian played a major role in bringing the lute back to life in the middle of the last cenrury. His Music of the Renaissance is only one of a few outstanding recordings.

Such a beautiful instrument. Then there is the archlute, and the theorbo.

Yep, Nigel North is one of the best lutenists out there. Why aren't they called Lutenants? Missed a trick, there...

Paul O'Dette has some nice recordings as well.
(Love the music, but I found the instrument was a bit of a nightmare. Rather like driving a classic British sportscar, you have to be dedicated to it and put up with a lot of awkwardness)

Rather like driving a classic British sportscar, you have to be dedicated to it and put up with a lot of awkwardness) I built and played lutes for many years, oh and this is my car! And one of my lutes, they are both demanding mistresses. It is said that for every 10 minutes you play a lute you spend 20 mins tuning.

Imagine tuning a theorbo or archlute then!
