My main instrument is: probably needing new strings

I duly met up with dreadnought28 last night for this gig at The Met in Bury. My heart always jumps when the stage set-up is just acoustic guitars...(well, an electric bass, too, but I'll allow that) The support act was Australian singer/songwriter (and builder of his own guitar) Nigel Wearne. His first song was 'effect heavy' and my heart sank a little but he soon got over himself and played a set of great songs. There was gob-iron in there, as well. Good hat, too. In case he thought we hadn't suffered enough, he brought out a banjo for a couple of songs. He was VERY accomplished on both guitar and banjo. A really enjoyable set with good craic between songs. We then, in Nigel Wearne's words, had a 5 minute break for 10 minutes so it was 15 minutes later that Lauren and 'The Northern Cowboys' (Tom - her partner and co-writer - and Mark (Bass guitar) took to the stage. I am clearly going to have to seriously up my hat game! They played a full set... difficult to describe the style: country folk or, perhaps, folk country. Lauren has a great voice, Tom's guitar work was immaculate (once he'd got the scratchy lead sorted out) and Mark's bass playing was unobtrusive but useful. The evening finished when Nigel (whom they'd met in Montreal at some sort of folk collective) joined them on stage for a couple of numbers. As promised, I bought a copy (well, 2 - one for myself) of Lauren's latest album for the FFG prize this week. If you fancy winning it - just head over to the relevant thread and, topically, chuck yer hat in the ring. It was, of course, great to meet up with Chris (and get the lowdown on how he got hold of Don MacLean's banjo from the 1973 tour).

Good to see you too Leo. It was a great night as was last night in Liverpool. Pre COVID I performed regularly with Lauren, Tom and Mark. Mark has produced my album which hopefully will finally get out soon. Both Tom and Lauren feature on many of the tracks.
