How did you apply the stain? I recently tried apply colortone drops in isopropyl, I have to say the results were difficult to warm to. Yours looks much more even.

Here’s the latest pictures, after 3/4 coats of stain, some rubbing down and 3 coats of oil. It’s not quite what I was hoping for but has a well played look already. Major learning point is how the different woods absorb the stain.

Youre right its got a really lovely warm old friend vibe going on there.
I played around a little with the cherry red from Stewmac, completely different shade by the way, and found that mixing the colour stain with shellac and then spraying gave really uniform results. The mix I used was 16 drops to 25ml of shellac. Since shellac works with most finishes it had no problem taking a waterborne lacquer on top.

Well good and bad news on this project The good it’s finished The bad; the neck angle is such that action at the 12th fret is about 7mm! I took it round to a local tech and the plan is to route out a “pocket” to lower the bridge so that it’s playable.

At least the bad news could have been worse! Looking good and hope will soon be sounding jangletastic!

Just to close this off; the tech wanted nearly twice what the kit cost to do the work and a setup which was fair price but more than I was prepared to pay so I took matters into my own hands:)
I got a Forstner bit and countersunk the bridge studs which lowered the action to a playable level. But then I found the neck was too narrow for me, it’s about 42mm which is very cramped for a 12 string. So I listed it on Facebook and yesterday it went to its forever home.
