In this thread I said my dream guitar was a Rickenbacker 12 string. Well I fancied a project so found this Which arrived yesterday After some sanding and checking alignment it’s now looks more like a guitar Well what’s the point of having the house to myself if I can’t build a guitar on the kitchen table?

But the big question remains: how should I finish it?
One thing is fixed is that it will be red. Just because.
Original plan was to stain and oil. For various reasons: I know I can get a decent result with oil, I have oil left over from my Telecaster refinish and I hate hiding nice wood.
But I doubt I’ll get the maple the same colour as the mahogany and concerned it may look odd, but may be a feature as well. So I’m veering towards a solid colour but I’ve never really sprayed anything before* and I don’t really have a spray area but I could possibly improvise something.
What does the panel think?
And yes, this is a very first world problem
*we can gloss over youthful indiscretions

What a fab project! Congrats on that - hope all proceeds to plan. Did it come with all the electrics and hardware?
An oil finish could be fab, though I know naaaaaartheeeeeng about staining...
Spraying should be OK outside if you can wait for a still day when the weather has warmed up a bit.
May you have many jingle-jangle mornings, Paul!

Keith it comes with all the parts. All I need to do is paint/oil it and put it together.

Looks a great project, and very interested to see the finished product.
I have sprayed various things in the past, but never a guitar. I made spray booths out of large cardboard boxes in my garage and bought a disposable mask from Screwfix (other building supply organisations are available).
We are fortunate to have some jolly fine guitar makers as members here; it might be worth asking for some helpful hints from them?

... and hopefully a Onephordtrickenbacker sticker too.... Like you’re thinking but I’d need to go for at least an 18 string version to fit “Onephordtrickenbacker” on the headstock. And I struggle enough with six.

I went to a Rubiio demo earlier in the week. The products are a bit more expensive but really good. The offices over here are in Nuneaton. One of the demos I watched was of as a black (they do a lot of colours) stain on oak (ebonizing). The stain was applied and just left i.e. not wiped off. When it had dried (oxidisation) it was one of the best I'd seen. After the stain had dried their oil was used (put on/wipe off) Zero VOC's and carbon friendly. You won't find them in Travis Perkins etc. They are going for the high end market. Large floor at Gatwick is one of the current projects. Rubio

I am deeply jealous and will follow with great interest. On "my list" is a 330/12W - walnut, because I like the natural look. Also on "my list" is a 350SH - Susannah Hoffs signature model, because, well, Susannah Hoffs:

Well it's going to need a logo It's a bit ragged when blown up but looks fine at truss rod cover size. Just need to work out how to get it on there now
