Hello! I'm wondering if anyone can help me understand something about Nic Jones' playing. There's a lot of attention given to the percussive elements of his style, but he also used another technique that I haven't seen discussed much. His backing on June Tabor's 'Bonny May' is a good example. You can also hear it clearly on this live version of 'Clyde Water' and a few other tracks too. Clearly he's not using his usual fingerstyle approach on these songs. To my ears it sounds more like clawhammer banjo technique. I *think* he's using mainly downstrokes with the first or second finger to strum chords and pick out individual notes, whilst also using the thumbpick to play bass notes and the palm to damp strings and introduce rhythmic thumps. Which is... challenging. I can make it work fairly well on a few of my own arrangements but the part on Clyde Water is just bonkers. Anyone got a better idea of how he might have done it? Are there other guitarists who used this approach?

I'm no expert apart from the clawhammer guitar lesson on Martin Simpson's teaching series. You've probably seen this by Sam Carter: Sam Carter Canadee-i-oHe may be worth asking anyway. Hope it helps Martin

I think your own explanation is as close to to truth as you'll get jellytussle. Sounds just like frailing to me too. And, welcome to the Forum! keith

Thank you Keith!
One of these days I'll get round to recording my ham-fisted attempts at the same style and we can see whether it sounds remotely similar.
