I was just thinking, that's always a bad start. But I can't remember the last time I broke a string, it could be twenty years or so, my favourite string choice is 11s Phosphor Bronze or Elixir 11s Phosphor Bronze. Not sure if I'm getting a better player or the strings are getting better quality, I play fingerpicking style 95% of the time.

I think it depends how you use them. I use Elixir PB 12s and change tunings a lot. Once in a while I'll break a G string (almost always while tuning down - never understood why that is). Not often, but often enough that I always bring a spare guitar to gigs as I'm the slowest re-stringer in the world.
But certainly if you're not messing about with them too much they are very durable! One day when I'm famous I'll have lots of guitars, one for each tuning, and a roadie to hand them to me during the gig... 😀

Reading your post did remind me of the time I restrung a classical guitar, that took me ages, finished the job feeling quite pleased with myself, so finished of by trimming of the excess lengths of string at the headstock, and cut straight though the main string, went from feeling pleased with myself to totally disheartened.

After I've stabbed myself a few times, that is!

I just don't believe it, I haven't broken a guitar string for over twenty years, and guess what I've just done, it was the thin e string, but it still broke, I'm gutted. That's the last time I brag about anything.

Changing strings? Mark my words, if you start down that path there's no telling where you'll end up. Next it'll be practising, and learning all the words...
(I think the strings on my acoustic bass are now old enough to vote. On the guitars, not quite there yet)

I think I broke a string on my D35 once when I was with the Ashridge Ramblers, so that would be before 1979.
I broke a G string (don't) on my Dobro at an open air festival in a crazed jam backing someone famous (can't remrmber who but I know he's dead now) and I was still working in the corporate job so that wuold be prior to '93.
Apart from that I over strung the octave G on my Harmony 12 string once - the only .010 I use.
